luminosity within.
we cannot listen to our hearts
when we’re in our heads
and the mind
can lead us down
a thousand wrong rabbit holes
taking us on every journey
every outcome
every parallel universe
known and unknown
written or not
this can be genius
or it can be anxiety
it is probably both.
we are “extraordinary machines”
but it is what luminosity
that animates us
that is most interesting to me.
when we are up in arms
when we are shielding our safety
from unknown perpetrators
real, perceived, or imaginary
there is no room for creativity.
a calm nervous system is the safest place
for the heart to be perceived
but a calm nervous system is only a point of contact
in the roller coaster of our lives.
even a monk alone
on retreat
fed and clothed
warm and sheltered
can make monsters of ants
can pull shame from honey
sometimes it is not reality that is the monster
but it is our minds and their conclusions
root yourself
in that warm perception of your body heat
root yourself
with hands-on sacral belly
that creative force that is the gut
and trust
what desire does speak?
what is mine to seek?
what adventure is mine to partake?
what am i here, in this world, to create?
our nervous system is just that
electric wiring
but without the heart
pumping oxygen
to that wet and spectacular brain
there is no perception
no thought, no speech, no sound, no light.
the luminosity is within.

You have to love the simplicity of universal language.
All this is a metaphor, astrology. Symbolism in energetics is just another language of light. We can use tea leaves or divination, esoteric information, seven rays makeup, human design, enneagram, or any of it.
Every language is a search for meaning.
This Full Moon in Leo is the tension between this season of Aquarius, this deepest valley of winter, meeting the hopeful promise of summer’s hottest heat peak (in the Northern Hemisphere).
As my mentor Ryan Evans says— what can summer teach winter?
When looking toward the symbolism of Aquarius, we think of an electric air sign, traveling information through the ethers. The classical planet associated with this season is Saturn — the harsh reality checks and the willingness to see and work with the world as it is. To innovate and envision within the constructs of physical space, time and physics.
Uranus, the newer affiliate of Aquarius tends to see beyond that construct and desires to smash the rules that confine it.
Uranus is a key player in this lunation. At 23° Taurus, it is in a tight square to the Sun and Moon at 24° of respective Leo & Aquarius. Squares offer us insight into tension, a physical force that modifies through stress. The opposition of the Sun and Moon is already the rubber band pull of tension between the seasonal archetypes of Aquarius and Leo — and to create a T-square forces the energy into one arena or another on a personal and universal scale.
What would tension look like coming out through the Sun in Aquarius conjoined with Mercury? That could feel like nervous system tension, over-thinking, lack of focus, getting too far into the future, over-analysis, the desire to hide, and the desire to disconnect/self-alienate even if you care deeply about what is happening to the community around you. It could look like innovation, making a plan, finding the connection points in circumstances, and how all the pieces fit.
What would this tension look like if it were expressed through the Moon in Leo? That could look like big feelings, expressions of love, of heart, of leadership. It could look like creative outbursts of energy; it could look like pulling up more chairs at the table to accommodate or it could look like self-centered bids for attention/validation. It could look like playfulness and childlike curiosity and capacity that could ripple laughter through space, cutting through monotony.
What would this tension look like if it were expressed through Uranus in Taurus? Truth surfacing, new perspectives in matters relating to climate, labor, security, finance and money matters, arts and music. It could look like breakdowns and breakthroughs, nervous system shock waves in humans, or shockwaves in tectonic plates. Uranus in Taurus looks like change. Physical, measurable change. What or where that manifests personally or globally is to be determined.
The Sun and Mercury’s conjunction this weekend (aka Cazimi for all those enjoying fancy terminology) is not exact on this Full Moon but very much intact in its ability to perceive.
If we were to look at the natal chart of Mercury and the Sun at this moment, we can think of it as solipsistic self-awareness or the ability to download information into our bodies, to upgrade and receive new information. Mercury is the “lower” octave of Uranus (Mercury resented me for even using the term “lower” but it’s just a closer, quicker planet compared to Uranus’ massive capacity, dancing at a distance) and the combination of Mercury as personal mind and Uranus as higher mind, higher perspective can indicate an upload of harsh truths (because its a square).
I can’t help but think about Kendrick Lamar’s brilliant medley of metaphor and catharsis on Sunday evening and how that square of Sun/Mercury and Uranus may have been so eloquently expressed through this massive expression of art on the scale of the Superbowl. Uranus is a shockwave, it is perspective, and in the energy of Taurus it can be soul-shaking art and electric expression. It doesn’t matter what the astrology is; his protest (Uranus) expression was a masterpiece, and it took the collective (Aquarius) to pull it off. There are better minds out there to illuminate an interpretation of this Pluto Return of the United States reckoning and reminder of Black Labor and the building of America, the subversive metaphors of the number of stars on Samuel L. Jackson’s Uncle Sam costuming or the waving of a Palestinian flag by a performer. Brilliant is the word, and Uranus and Aquarius are associated with Genius. Kendrick Lamar has been held in high regard for his work as an artist, receiving the Pulitizer Prize for his album Damn, and anyone who is an ally or actively unlearning cultural norms and applying Anti-Racist idealogy knows that the policing of Black bodies in America, the policing of behaviors, of speech, of art is all a form of narcissistic white supremacy… an idealogy experiencing its death rattle.
I can’t help but think of the bad guy, tripped up on adrenaline and rage rising for its last stand, only to be taken down by the forces of good. That is this nightmare era of executive dis-orders. That is this subterranean uprising of white male fragility and patriarchy wanting to grab holds at the feet of the emergence of equality and equity.
This Full Moon in Leo, I would love for you to contemplate what is YOURS to do in this moment?
This Full Moon in Leo, I would love for you to feel your heart and recognize that love, that creativity, that art, that space for everyone is worth fighting for, is worth the creative risk and effort to take down harmful idealogies with humor, with skill, with curiosity, and with the skillful mind of an Aquarian to discern and cut through to the truth of what is really happening.
